Bio. Rick Emerson.

Rick Emerson generally dislikes radio station bios, as they're designed to give you a false sense of kinship with a mouth-breathing DJ who's playing "Where the Streets Have No Name" for the six-thousandth time.

Rick Emerson is also writing this in the third person, as that's the voice that just appeared in his head while he was typing away in a low-rent dive bar on Grand Avenue.

Stop now.

Alright.

Hi, I'm Rick Emerson. We'll skip the boring stuff about where I was born, what brought me to Portland, etc, except to hit a few high (or low) points:

Born: March 7th, 1973, Kennewick, Washington
First broadcast in Portland, Oregon: Monday, November 9th, 1998

In between, I worked a series of low-paying, fascinating, rewarding, glorious, and horrible radio jobs in various formats, in various cities, using one ridiculous, fake-sounding "radio voice" after another. In 1998, I was brought to Portland to host the midday show on (then) Hot Talk 1080 KOTK, and I've been in this fine city ever since. Through multiple firings, various industry upheavals, and at least fifteen producers, I've been speaking to -and with- the good people of Portland for over a decade.

You might remember a short-lived, nationally-syndicated program called The Rick Emerson Show that existed for a couple of years near the turn of the millennium. That was me as well, though in a mode that wasn't very satisfying to do, and (judging by its almost-immediate cancellation) wasn't very much fun to listen to. I'm proud to say that the folks in Portland (and, as time went on, in every corner of the globe) supported the show even through these dark times, and that we -the audience and the show collectively- are now a force to be reckoned with---bringing our twisted/brilliant sensibility to every single resident of planet Earth, one person at a time.

Apart from the radio show, I've managed to inject my own brand of entertainment into music, movies, television, and stageplay. Everything, really, except interpretive dance. Most of this has been with the indispensable aid of my creative partner, Joni DeRouchie, who is actually editing these words before you read them---such is her ubiquitous omniscience.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading this self-serving and only somewhat compelling account of how I, Rick Emerson, came to have the greatest gig a man could want...entertaining a bunch of wonderful lunatics who make my life just as interesting as I (hopefully) make theirs.

Signing off,

Rick Emerson
